Mini 518: Underground Mafia

The doors to your cells grind open in unison, revealing a large, grimy, area. The only features are a pair of harsh, fluorescent floodlights, a rusty PA speaker, a tinted window far up on the wall, and an odd looking wooden board hanging on the opposite wall. The board has slots on the left side for thirteen placards and next to each placard, seven stubby pegs. As you get closer, each one of you recognizes your name on one of the placards. The final one ominously reads “No Lynch.”

Under the sign is a pile of broken plaques bearing more odd names. In the pile, one of you finds a rusty metal rectangle that some recognize:

. You have no special powers other than your vote for who to lynch. Whether you are alive or dead, you will win when only town aligned players are alive.

Upon closer inspection, the small bit of chain still attached is covered in teeth-marks as if someone had gnawed it free. The rectangle is discarded in disgust.

Just as the nervous glances start really picking up, the rusty old PA speaker crackles to life.

“Welcome to the Arena. You have been chosen to take part in a game of Mafia for the enjoyment of our patrons. The

rules

are as follows:

1: Every player has been assigned a win condition and an alignment. If at any time a win condition is fulfilled (or this cannot be prevented), all players with that win condition (even if they are dead) will be declared the winners and all other players will lose.

2: The following alignments: “Town”, “Mafia” and the following win conditions: “Only Town aligned players are alive.”, “Only Mafia aligned players are alive.” exist in this game, but there may or may not be more.

3: The game will start in the Day phase. During the day, all players may vote upon an action. If the majority of players vote for another player, that player will be lynched and may no longer participate in any capacity (though they may still win). If the majority of players vote for “No Lynch,” the game will proceed directly to the Night phase.

4: You may vote for a player by hanging your voting tally on a peg next to their name (or by posting

Vote: PlayerX

with “PlayerX” replaced with the name of the player you are voting for.) You may only vote for one player at a time, and if you are changing your vote, you must first remove your tally (or post

Unvote

)

5: Once a majority of votes has been reached, the action voted upon will be taken no matter what. Any further votes or changes in votes will be too late and disregarded as such.

6: After a Lynch or No Lynch has occurred, the game will move into Night, and you will retire to your cells. Some players are permitted to communicate with myself or each other if the role they were assigned specifically says so.

All communication not specified by your role is expressly forbidden.

7: After all players have communicated any “Night Choices,” or three days have passed, all living players will resume the game in a new Day phase. This cycle will repeat until a win condition is fulfilled.

8: If a player does not participate in the discussion, their shock collar may be employed to force (or “Prod) their participation. Simply make their non-participation clear. If you have a reason not to talk but do not want to be “Prodded” please make an announcement to that effect.

9: If a player escapes or dies in non-game related circumstances, they will be quickly replaced. The replacement player, while a different person, will have the same role, alignment, and win condition of the player they are replacing. Additionally, if that player’s predecessor had sent or received any official communications during Night phases, they will be informed of these communications.

10: If not enough players are participating or the spectators grow bored, a deadline may be enacted. When a deadline hits, the player with the most votes will be lynched regardless of whether or not they have a majority of votes. If there is a tie at deadline, the

first

player to have received the most votes will be lynched.

11: Dead players to not talk. They do not post. They do not PM. They do not “Bah.” They are dead.

12: Breaking any of the above rules or revealing official transcripts of mod-player communication (Posting a PM) will result in a kill at the spectator’s discretion. The killed player will not be replaced. If they are killed during the Day, they game will go to Night.

13: This is a game. The majority of you are expected to die, but you are expected to die in an entertaining fashion. In other words, Have Fun!

but still he gives no response, choosing instead to slump to the ground and shiver violently.

"How unfortunate" the voice notes "we will have to begin the game without him."

Also, I was assuming that the Korlash voters were red because you weren't counting Gunslinger's earlier vote for Korlash that wasn't bolded. Now that Gunslinger has a real vote, I'm curious. Are they red for some other reason? If this has already been explained, I apologize.

If a deadline were to hit immediately, the player highlited in red would be lynched. In that (false) VC, Korlash and Sudo_Nym were tied for the lead in votes, but Korlash had recieved his before Sudo_Nym.

It's best to err on the side of caution. If it feels like you're probably in the grey, it's best to drop it. Metas are perfectly fine, just do them on games that are already over.

Adel steps back from the voting board. The tally that sealed Miztef's fate still rocks slightly back and forth as the energy imparted to it is whittled away by friction and gravity.

"You have decided?" the voice of the Mod calls down from above. 7 members of the town nod their agreement.

"Good, then we have a lynch."

The creaking of a pully much in need of oiling is heard throughout the arena as a well worn noose descends from the ceiling to eye (and neck) level. While others stare, a few have the forethought to grab Miztef's arms and legs.

Lashing out violently, but unable to break out of the grips of his captors, Miztef is led to the noose. No matter which way his head jerks, the noose is always one step ahead, and eventually, it is applied and tightened.

No sooner had the volunteer execution team released its grip did a trap door open beneath Miztef's feet. For a moment, he is all bulging and gasping. He rocks back and forth as the energy imparted to him is whittled away by friction and gravity. Then he is still.

The PA system crackles:

"Night" lasted at most half an hour. The constant, harsh lighting made time difficult to measure, and nobody was really sure of whether it was actually night or day as "Day 2" started.

10 doors swung open into the main arena and 10 players stepped or stumbled out. Before any sort of role could be called to find out who was missing, the PA cleared things up.

This "day" had been far shorter than the previous one, and 9 of you were very happy for that. 1 was not.

Korlash continued to joke, banter, and giggle all the way up to the end. As a second rope descended next to Miztef's still-fresh corpse, pleas of "comon' guys, let's get serious" and "I didn't mean it!" errputed from him.

The rope pulls tight and the trapdoor releases. Somebody in the audience calls out "phail!" after their fallen annoyance. The PA system crackles to life.

To the surprise of many (some more than others), all cell doors closed the past "Night" opened the following "Day." 9 players filed out into the arena where the rank oders of Miztef and Korlash greeted them after a particuarly lengthy Night.

"9 alive," the voice confirmed "5 to lynch."

"No!" a voice rang out through the crowd. "We will not lynch!"

8 whip around to see the ninth. It was GunslingerKB. Apparently staying quiet the last two days had given him the strength to now protest, and his eyes shone with a holy fury they had never held before.

"9 alive, 5 to lynch" the voice repeated.

"Didn't you hear me?" GunslingerKB asked. "We will not lynch!" He now stood at the center of an 8 player circle. All nervously eyed the shock collar fastened around his neck and unconsciously fingered the collars fastened to theirs.

The light in GunslingerKB's collar turned red for the space of a prod. The knees capitulated but the eyes did not. The collar alit a second time and longer, and GunslingerKB was brought to writhe upon the ground. His efforts to regain his long lost footing would be interrupted by a third shock.

Spread-eagled on the filthy floor of the arena, GunslingerKB continued to stare defiantly up at square of tinted glass and the shadows beyond. After a customary checking of the pulse, his eyes would finally be closed and his body thrown to the side to clear the playing area.

All day long the voting tablets had flown over the board as what the players had come to call "bandwagons" were formed and dissolved. Finally, (with a bit of prodding from The Voice), 5 tablets had lined up next to Mr. Flay, their first letters spelling a sinister "AJJAO".

"Have you decided?" The Voice asks. One after the other, A, J, J, A, and O nod their heads.

"Excellent" The Voice intones. A third noose descends from the high ceiling. Proudly shaking off the hands of his townspeople, Mr. Flay places the noose around his own neck. As the floor recedes, he lets out a final, accusing "AJJAO!"

The Voice, as always, finalizes the day:

7 doors open. 4 players walk into the "arena". 2 more stumble, and a seventh crawls. No sound comes from the loudspeaker for a time, and the players count themselves to see who is missing.

Adel's door is closed. With the exception of Miztef, Korlash, and Mr. Flay, all eyes go first to her door, and then to the PA speaker, waiting.

The players look around in confusion. Finally, one volunteers: "7 alive, 4 will lynch?"

"Bingo."

Oman casts the final vote as Satael cowers before the jurors. For a time, nothing happens. The players look to the rusted speaker adorning the upper wall, but the characteristic wail of feedback is nowhere to be heard.

The long closed door to Korlash's cell opens and a dead man's phone rings. It rings twice more before anybody thinks to do anything about it and three more times before it is answered.

"He wants to know if we've decided."

The four judges nod.

"He says 'excellent'"

A noose is lowered, and the four executioners make use of it.

"He says: '

Satael - Mafia

Lynched Day Four. Please retire to your cells for Night Four.'"

At the virtual daybreak, 5 players emerge from their cells. A process that used to take a quite a while becomes easier with fewer heads and more familiarity. Oman is missing.

The Voice is cut off by a soft moaning coming from Oman's cell. The faint sound of weak flesh on metal can be heard from inside, and then the brief buzz of a shock collar.

"Allow me to end the suspense." Jerubbaal says as he places the final vote on himself.

"I'm the last scum, I even have the gun to prove it." With an impeccable sense of drama, he whips out a carefully concealed pistol and points it at the 4 exhausted townspeople. An end of the chain which had once kept it in his cell visibly dangles from the butt.

"You win when only the Mafia aligned players are alive!" jerubbaal shouts to the heavens; to The Voice, to nobody. "Or when nothing can prevent this!"

He shoots Sudo_Nym.

Abstract Actuary makes a run for jerubbaal's pistol but trips, skidding before jerubbaal's feet.

"We're in LyLo now, aren't we?!"

Jerubbaal brutally kicks Abstract Actuary in the nose. Blood covers the toe of his shoe. Another shot, then gore.

"Why aren't you stopping this?" curiouskarmadog asks of The Voice.

"The rules stop where entertainment begins." comes the simple reply. As a means of punctuation, the silhouettes in the spectator's booth applaud the goings on in the arena.

"But you've already lost. We lynched you." Jitsu protests.

"Do I looked lynched?"

Jerubbaal turns his focus to curiouskarmadog. He is so focused, in fact, that he fails to notice the noose descending behind him.




"Have you decided?" The Voice asks for the final time.

"Yes"
"Yes"




Sneering, jerubbaal draws back the trigger on his battered pistol. The bullet hits a moving curiouskarmadog square in the shoulder. A fraction of a second later, curiouskarmadog's shoulder hits jerrubbaal square in the chest.

The trap door opens.

"

, lynched Day Five."

Using jerubbaal's intended noose as support, curiouskarmadog manages to stand.

"Congratulations to the

for winning the game!"

He stoops to pick up jerubbaal's discarded pistol.

for being this game's MVP!"

Even with only one good arm, he is sure to take careful aim.

My next game is going to be much more chill (Achewood Mafia!). I just wanted to push the limits of "normal" flavor.
