In the field of diagnostic medicine, reasons are overrated.

The same is true of mafia.

Reasons are also overrated in the Law Room.

For example, let us say a man commits rape, but the police get the evidence through an illegal search.

Then they would be obligated in a court of law to let this rapist go free due to their illegal procedure.

We can not let the bindings of law constrain us, we must meet the Mafia with swift action and merciless attack.

IN a court of law it is crucial that we do not punish the innocent, in a mafia game it is crucial that we punish the guilty.

Let's say there are twelve people, you know that the 8 mafia are within these twelve people and the game has a total of a hundred players. If you have no way of figuring out who among those twelve are mafia, then it is a perfectly acceptable and indeed and good strategy for the town to kill all twelve of those people in order to gurantee a win for everyone.

Now consider the same scenario in a court of law, if we were to know that there are 8 criminals among twelve people but that 4 of them are completely innocent and we had no way of figuring out who was who, we would have no choice but to let them all go, we can't punish the innocent in order to insure that the guilty are also punished.

This is different in diagnostic medicine, if a patient is dying and it could be due to failures in twelve possible areas, and you know that one of those areas is causing his illness, then it is definitely a viable option to give him a blanket treatment for all possible areas.

The question posed was not as to whether this game of mafia was more like diagnostic medicine but mafia in general.

The obvious answer is that in Mafia, we do not need to prove guilt beyond any doubt, whereas you would need to show that in a court of law.

This is also true in diagnostic medicine, the doctors do not need to prove it is due to a specific disease or cause beyond any doubt, but rather can act on a fairly good guess.

You can apply my diagnostic medicine approach by lynching Shafted.

I like how the rest of my team seems to be missing in action.

Ok, who do you guys want to lynch.

I have a gut feeling about Volkan, I could be uttterly utterly utterly wrong.

Here's how I approach the game right now, players are not going to be inconsistent due to their alignment, this game has the feel of a 3:7 nightless so there's no real trickery to use.

Volky has no reason to detract from his normal playing style, this could be easily consistent with his normal playing style, but that's the thing, the way he jumps on JiveMachine feels in a way like he's a wolf jumping on this poor sheep that is just geniunely confused and screwed up.

The best play for a mafia in a situation often is to attack the weakest players that are not on their team, sometimes there's no reason not to attack the weakest players even if they are on your team because of how easy it is to get them to get lynched, the important thing here being that to win the mafia does not have to preserve a numbers adv, in this game if the mafia survive to the end that is fine, one mafia getting to the final 3 is a win.

another key is that there is no nightkill and there is no cop investigation(as far as we know) so a mafia member who makes himself look very protown by going for another mafia member is not going to have to answer questions like "well why haven't they nightkilled you yet" or deal with "I investigated you, you're scum, die".

Basically I think Vollkan's actions right b4 he pushes jive machine near that noose(or what he thought was lynch) feel somewhat lackluster to me, it doesn't feel like he is looking for scum, it feels like he is looking for an easy lynch.

Hmm I can't believe I glossed over that first line about what the % system means.

I feel more strongly now about Volk being scum.

IMO town tries often to find the mafia by figuring out A) who is likely to be mafia and B) Who is not likely to be mafia.

Volk's list has a decidedly mafia-side tilt in that he is more suspiciious of us than who he is not suspicious of.

To be fair to him, he does preface his ranking with a comment in his lack of belief in "townie tells" and general paranoia is fine in a mafia game but I certainly find things troubling in that

one) mafia hate saying things like I believe X is innocent because then they can't bus X, mafia is more comfortable with making it so that everybody is suspicious so they can pick and choose which one to bus. By choosing to focus on bumping people above 50% to make them alll look moderately suspicious, Volk does a fairly poor job of finding out who is more likely to be town, and let's face it most of us are town.

I find it interesting that volkan belives that scumtells exist but has a tougher time accepting "town tells" I would like to know why.

2) Volkan's list only includes the 5 people he can vote for, if he did do a full reread, why would he not also post his thoughts on the candidates on his side as well? If he is intent on hunting scum, shouldn't he give us a fair assessment of the candidates on his side of the aisle in order to aid our efforts in hunting scum?

Sure he does not have a vote but we can certainly hear his voice. I think the reason he did not review the activities of the people on his side is because he believes TJM to be head first in the noose and completely hopeless and that he doesn't necesarily need to guide us to a lynch because by saying anything further he either jeopardizes his cover or he makes TJM look like a less attractive lynch.

If that were not true, I do not see why he would not also post his conclusions on the remaining half of the game.

In my opinion, a townie is as likely to crack under pressure as a scumbag and start tripping all over himself. It's pretty stressful to be playing in a game with the constant threat of death by mob lynch hanging over your head.

So what I see often is that the newbies or the weaker players will crack, the stronger players or more experienced players will give a calm collected answer, but mostly the responses to sharp questioning is often independent of alignment.

Which does make me question the use of them early in the game except as a means to persuade the rest of the town into voting a certain way.

This is why I do not believe in launching sharp attacks in certain day ones.

Why do you expect pointed questioning to get results?

I think there is a certain effect to having a pointed questioning/reasoned attack prematurely, it does lift the light off others players and put less pressure on them to find their own suspects, I've realized that oftentimes a discussion dominated by a single interrogator or other can lock others outside of the discussion and allow more crafty scum to quietly agree their way in.

I don't think a meta-check warrants much.

for example, let's say Dean lurks in every game, would that reduce his lurking in this game to a null tell for you and cause you to drop him back to 50%? I'd think you'd rather keep the pressure on him to get him to say more, possibly because saying more would help reveal more of his character or what the heck he believes.

The same is true for me in regards to you, though you don't say who you think are more likely to be town, I would want you to say so because it does help me figure out what you are.

Generally I believe people who come up with numbering systems that try to quantify the suspicion they have for people to be fairly suspicious. I have no doubt that you might do this numbering thing in every game or put scary numbers next to people's names to inflate suspicion and give your opinion more of a scientific weight. But I do find such quantification to be fairly poor logic because of the connective nature of mafia and also because the number doesnt really mean anything, how much more suspicious is a person of score 200 than score 300? Is it more or less than the jump between 80 and a hundred? what type of scoring scale are you going for?

I've already addressed what I feel about Vollkan using numbering in this game even if he uses it in all games and I've even addressed why I would attack him for it even if he were to behave this way in all games regardless of what implications it may or may not have for his scumminess in this game.

If Vollkan does the % thing in every game previous to this one and then does the % thing in this game then it would show the Vollkan is keeping his behaviour in line with previous behaviour, he is not trying anything new, he is trying the same old stuff in order to stay in character.

That suggests that he is more wary of trying something new in order to play his cards tight to his chest and is following the standard "Make up bullshit numbers, say stuff that everyone can see, attack vigorously the weak players that you can get lynched because they can't defend themselves" formula that I would expect VolkScum to be using.

Or he could just really like the way he plays and be determined to do that same thing over and over again.

But I do think he's a rather interesting chap and I do find his numbers to feel artificial in a way that makes me think that he is coming up with them not because they are an accurate indication of likelihood to be scum but in order to appease the populace to show them that he is working hard on "scumhunting"

Oh and as to your question about what you not doing that shows for me, well reading over your posts so far this game, it shows me that either you feel you don't know enough to come up with accurate numbers or useful numbers.

Or you are just lazy and browsing the thread and not putting that much effort in because you think there's no real way to catch the scum on day one through intense analysis(something most of the site does agree with) and you've decided to take it easy since you're under no real pressure and just ski by.

So basically you are just making offhanded remarks here while skating by on the down-low.

I might consider lynching you but I haven't ever lynched Volky and he seems to be a lot more fun to tangle with because he responds in such wonderful prose when attacked.

Yes CKD

though you are skating by without saying anythiing, I am upset with you and that is why I want you to actually put some effort into this game.

However I am not going to ignore what I believe is scummy behaviour on the part of Vollkan just because there are some slackers in the game.

My beliefs right now are wholly consistent.

yes which is why we should not have lynched Beep Beep During that voting phase.

Frankly speaking Nobody replaces into a game and hammers his scum partner without much of a grasp on the game

Frankly speaking, I do not believe Beep is capable of hammering his scumpartner right out of the gate like that.

Frankly speaking with the number of people who thought Armlx was scum ,it would've been damn foolhardy to lynch Beep Beep before we get confirmation on what alignment Armlx has.

He's one of the people we get a lot more information on after reveal.

Yea. Scum just love to follow each other around on day one.

It's pretty pro play style.

No seriously, Armlx rode my coattails day one like Kobe on Shaq, scum do not do that to each other.

Btw Shafted, if you suspect TG, and TG is voting me, why would you vote me?(I know you suspect me, but that other person you suspect has his vote on me, so don't you think it'd be wise to reconsider your position?)

Bolded Responses are mine
shaft.ed wrote:Pooky I have to give you some credit, your playstyle is making my head explode, I just don't get it. It's making this game a lot of fun! OK on with the game.
PookyTheMagicalBear wrote:Do you really think I was trying to get you lynched shafted?
Obviously I do, I see no other reason for behaving the way you did.

Possibilities for why I would do what I did that don't involve lynching you would be, "looking for reaction from you" "looking for reaction from others" "baiting scum with bad idea" "throwing ideas around and seeing what happens" I mean if a person like Armlx randomly follows you around, wouldn't you throw some illogical hate around just to see if he jumps after it?

pooky wrote:If I were, why did I not vote you?
I don't know. I've asked you this on many occasions can you spell it out for me. I obviously find near certain accusations of scum alliance without a vote to be very scumy as you can distance yourself from a mislynch once the town gets worked up.

A distinct possibility here is that at the time, I did not actually want to lynch you or really had a strong inclination to believe you to be scu,

pooky wrote:You think my choice of not providing reasons is an active decision on my part?
Certainly, I've been asking for reasons the entire game and you make no attempt to answer me just reply with more questions like these.

Do you think I believed I could get a lynch on you without providing reasons? If the answer to that is no, then do you trhink I really was trying to lynch you?

pooky wrote:Why might I choose to not include any reasons on voting you?
As I said I interpret this is scum trying to fuel a lynch without dirtying their hands. And I thought you just said you never voted me.

But my hands are dirty, if you get lynched and show up innocent, does it really matter whether I provided a vote or reasoning? It's not like people can't read the thread, in fact I would be more suspicious for having pushed it without providing reasoning perhaps?

1) I wanted to know what vollkan believed to be grounds for lynching.

2) I didn't immediately follow up on it. Armlx following me three times isn't that conclusive. Giving Armlx more time to do other things would give us more information. Throwing my weight somewhere else might spook him. I'm not going to immediately turn on somebody who jumped after me and say AH HAH I CAUGHT YOU NOW SUCKER, I'd wait and see what else he does and evaluate his actions. My point is, if I wanted to throw suspicion on you, I wouldn't have a hard time coming up with a list of reasons to attack you with. If I somehow found it impossible to come up with some reasons for you being scum, then I wouldn't decide to suddenly go out of my way to attack you.

I would imagine if I were a scumbag and there was a timer on my buddy's life, I'd try to get a mislynch to save his ass.

Nobody else's really tried to save Near's ass from being fried by a twist. So yea I think you're scum.

if you are town and Near is scum, then a scum might try to hammer afterwards

If you are scum and Near is scum, then scum has no incentive to hammer afterwards.

Basically at the point when she voted, Near was dead.

However if near had been on at that time and seen that vote WITHOUT knowing he was dead, he would place a vote on you if you were town because he'd want to save his own ass.

the fact that he didn't implies either you are scum or he wasn't paying attention.

there are plenty of reasons why she'd slap -one vote on you exactly one minute after deadline.

I don't see her doing it as scum.

would it be wise to just skip the rest of the daykilling in order to get on to the next day?

bad guy with daykill can daykill for win if there are 4 people left.

However if we lynch when there are 5 and agree not to daykill, then bad guy has no daykill oppurtunity since daykilling shows him/her to be bad guy?

One of the frontpage rules says:

Does this mean that scumbags can't use or receive daykills?

Frankly speaking, showing us a game where a town had to choose between lynching you when you are innocent and lynching a scumbag isn't a very good indicator of your alignment in this game.

I suggest we all take a time during the weekend to reread some key portions of the thread and then all of us post a fairly detailed post on which 2 players we believe are the likeliest to be the last 2 scum based on both behaviour and interaction.

and do it at the same time.

Yea.

look at it from the town point of view.

Townie would react the same way.

because if I believe you daykilled Adel.

Then I have no choice but to daykill someone. IF she is not scum and the game is not over then the scum with daykill can daykill to end the game.

So obviously I have to daykill before the scum daykills asap.

I already posted that I thought shafted was town.

Because I have to make a decision instantly. IF I wait and KarmadogScum logs on sees your daykill, and then shoots for the win, I don't have a chance to shoot then.

I didn't think he'd make a fake daykill.

Being complete illogical and all.

I shot CkD because I thought I could believe Vollkan(the investigated innocent) was telling the truth in thread when he shot you. Because if I wait, CkDScum might come online and shoot me.

Since I believe Vollk/Shafted are town, I am obligated to shoot CkD after a Vollkan shot on you because if I were to not shoot and you were to show up town, then CkD could show up and shoot me.

Not only that if CkDscum signs on, he could shoot me based on the same logic I've used to shoot him and be in the same position as me.

As I know my own protown status, it makes shooting him much better as an option then waiting for him to shoot me.

You used your vig because supposedly you thought it was possible for the scum to have multiple daykills and to be able to use them to end the game in a victoryfor them.(because honestly if they used multiple day vigs and it didnt end the game, how the hell would they survive the backlash)

I'm fairly sure that the circumstances surrounding your dayvig are MUCH MUCH worse than those surrounding mine.

Tying this to Lost Boys is silly because I have been lurking across the board over this time period due to reasons entirely unrelated to alignment.

It's just silly sensationalism at its worst.

nice drama there.

surely you could've forseen that a different playstyle would be necesarry for a game where the opening post says that the scum do not nightkill?

volkan - good doc

TG, Shaft.ed, Erg0, Near each have 50% chance of being an accurate lynch target.

Guide me through the logic you used to make that post.

1)I do argue against policies i believe to be pro-scum. I don't see what problem you have with that. I made it clear what I thought was scummy and why I thought it was scummy. I'm not sure how you expect me to play that.

2) This isn't hypocrisy, I wanted you to tell me why reasons are important day one when most of it is generally crap during day one. I certainly didn't think you'd take me seriously in my stance that reasons were unimportant. It was just one of those things were discussion lets me get an idea of where people are leaning on giving reasons/not giving reasons and the quality of the reasons necesarry for a bandwagon/lynch.

As to my CKD hunch vote thing, I'm always going to want more than just "a hunch" because a hunch is something fairly intangible. Anyone could just say "I had a hunch" or whatever. I want to know what hat hunch is based on, where did you first develop this hunch? was it in a bathroom stall? was it when you read up to line X? do you have anything beyond this hunch? When given the option, I am going to push for more, that's just basic play.

3. I thought she was trying to trick scum into moving a vote in a last ditch effort to move the wagon when Near had already bit the dust.

4. my point was that N has no incentive to not be online to stop his own lynch.

5. it was addressed to the only person voting me at the time, Adel

6. That was more of an attempt to get him to post more. A subtle hint that we would not tolerate lurking. My own conditions have more to do with my real life situation.

7. I don't think it's an accurate assessment because I don't see myself doing something like that.

8. Which is why I couldn't understand why you would fake a daykill in the first place. I didn't understand what type of information you could be fishing for, so I assumed you weren't fishing.

One) I was not familiar with your playstyle/meta at the time I made the post.

I continued because I wanted to move you off the meta and get you to commit to something more more solid in terms of who you thought were town.

2) Double standards? Well what did you expect me to do, just say that I was tossing suspicion onto Shafted to try to see what Armlx would do? Would seem fairly poor for getting a geniune reaction out of Armlx... If CkD chooses to deflect like I did, then he should have a reason for the deflection that could be shown at some point inthe future. Obviously I have reasons for wanting more than just a hunch. I also have reasons for not fully disclosing my reasoning at the time. Both of these can exist without being in contradiction.

3) So you are human. Who woulda known.

because he had been riding my coattails up till that point.

Because at that point I did not know who the scum were, so I couldn't just do things to seee what scum would do, I would do things to see what specific people would do.

Except our daykills don't cancel each other out because the circumstances under which they were made were incredibly different.

Shafted, do you have a daykill? I forget if you answered that already.

If we get to the point where either me or Adel is to be killed.

I would like it to be by Shafted Daykill rather than a lynch.

I had stated previously that I believed Shafted to be definitely townie.

My sentiments were the same as Vollkan's as to this point.

I killed CKD because I believe Shafted and Vollkan to both be town.

I have already stated this in my post-kill analysis/review/explanation.

Armlx is riding my coattails on day one because his vote basically follows mine around.

he doesnt follow on the first vote because it's rather early.

he starts following after that.

he also defends me heavily from CKD.

so i'd say he was pretty much gluing himself to me.
