Welcome to the little town of Metodico, where all the residents do everything in a most methodical, orderly fashion. Recently, the Mafia has moved in; and it has been decided (after methodically considering and ruling out all other possibilities) that the way to deal with this is to lynch the malefactors. How to play Methodical Mafia


Instead of submitting choices each night, during Night 1 all players with night choices must send me a list of all their targets for the entire game (unless otherwise stated in your role PM). On Night 1, your target will be the first player on your list. On Night 2 your target will be the next player on your list, and so on. If the next player on your list was dead when the Night began, I will ignore their name and go down to the next name, and so on until I get to a living player. Once I get to the end of the list, I will start again at the top of the list.

If you want to target someone on consecutive nights, you can do this by having them appear in consecutive positions on your list. If everyone on your list is dead, you will not have any more choices.
Each list may be a maximum of 20 names long
.

To help you formulate your lists, I will open the thread and start “Day 0” once I have sent out all the role PMs. Day 0 will last for about 7 days and during that time you may discuss strategy and ask any questions you may have. There will be no lynch on Day 0.
All lists must be sent to me before the end of Day 0.
We will then go to Night 1, which will last only so long as it takes me to process the lists.

PLEASE NOTE: I have taken a number of steps to ensure that claims will have very limited value in this game. You have been warned.


Other Rules


[01] Votes must be in bold. If you do not bold your vote, it will not be counted.
[02] Please be attentive and unvote, if necessary, before casting a new vote. This is not required, but I’d appreciate it.
[03] Lynching will require a simple majority of votes. Once a player has reached the necessary majority, their pleas are useless and any attempts to unvote will be unheeded. Feel free to post in twilight, though.
[04] You may vote: no lynch. Majority votes of this kind are necessary to end the day without a death.
[05]If I impose a deadline, a lynch will require half a regular majority (rounded up). Once we are down to six or seven players, a lynch at deadline will require 3 votes. Once we are down to five players or fewer, only lynches with a regular majority will occur.
[06] When I set a day deadline, the deadline lasts until I actually lock the thread.
[07] The game is not to be discussed outside the thread unless your role specifically states that you may do so – and then insofar as allowed by your role.
[08] Once your death scene has been posted, you’re dead. Stop typing. Not even a “Bah!” post, please. Save it for after the game is over.
[09] No small or invisible text. Don’t edit/delete previously submitted posts either.
[10] Don’t quote any PMs from me. If you do, I will destroy you.
[11] If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.
[12] Unlike other mods I am fallible. Please point out any mistakes I make gently. In particular, if I post a vote count that does not accurately reflect your vote, it is your responsibility to correct me. If you don’t your vote may be treated as it appears in the vote count.
[13] Remember, it’s a game and it’s supposed to be fun. Be nice to your fellow players and your mod. I have zero tolerance for abusive posts.

Those of you who have who have played in my games before will know that I mean it when I say that have have zero tolerance for abusive posts. I regard post 52 as unacceptable and posts 62 and 71 as borderline. I trust you'll all keep Rule [13] firmly in mind for the remainder of the game. Thank you.

On a lighter note, I have slightly revised "How to play Methodical Mafia":

As morning comes to Metodico, the residents methodically arrive in the Town Square in the following order:

Mr. Flay
Xdaammo

A methodical search of Seol and LoudmouthLee's homes reveals that they have both been murdered! But that is where the similarity ends.

Seol appears to have been the victim of a carefully planned assassination. There is reason to believe that whoever killed him had been watching him for some time, and may even have staged a "dry run" in the recent past. He was found dead in his bed, shot once in the heart and once in the head. Very methodical.

On the other hand, LoudmouthLee's attack seems to have been very much an ad hoc affair. Someone just smashed in his door and stabbed him repeatedly all over his body. A most random and senseless slaying.

There is only one thing for it. The good people of Metodico will have to methodically deduce who is responsible for these wicked crimes and lynch them. There is only one suitable piece of rope in the Town, so it will not be possible to string up all the wrongdoers together. Rather they will have to be hanged one at a time... methodically.

I'm really enjoying this game. It's such fun when you see people posting who you know are doomed to die tonight or the next. Also, I'm enjoying figuring out the permutations of the effect of the lynch. Things like: "X shouldn't be trying to get Y lynched, because that will mean that..."

Thoughts from the Mod

I enjoyed designing this game, which I did with a lot of help from Amb - thanks! We enjoyed thinking of various ways to discourage claims: hints of Cults and of a non-Methodical killer, safe claims for the Mafia and the SK, and multiple cops to discourage "follow the cop".

It was fun trying to work out the permutations of various lynch choices in advance. For example, I worked out that if the Town had lynched VitaminR day 2, as they nearly did, then the SK would have killed Nocmen (Mafia) and the Sane Cop would have investigated Nocmen, thereby confirming his sanity. Also, the Roleblocker would have prevented Nocmen from killing the SK, saving the SK's one-shot immunity. In the end the Town lynched Nocmen, which was probably an even better result.

Similarly, I worked out early on Day 3 that lynching Mr. Flay would virtually guarantee a town win: no kill due to BrianMcQueso blocking Erg0, and both cops would investigating Erg0: thereby making clear that distad was sane and CES naive and that Erg0 was the last scumbag.

It was also lucky for the Town that VitaminR died night 3 -- not only was he already a major suspect, but he was role-blocked, and so the Town might have thought that that was why there was no "Methodical Murder" that night.

I agree with some of Mr. Flay's comments on the setup. I think in hindsight I should have allowed the Mafia to talk; I only said that they couldn't because the nights were non-existent. I should have let them talk during the day.

On the other hand, I thought I had given the SK plenty of advantages (1-shot nighkill immunity, safe-claim, cop-immune). Although having lots of cops made claiming cop harder, I did tell him there were lots of cops, which (if I had been the SK) would have led me to claim early, using the "Mafia or Cult" result to prove that I was indeed a cop. Later claimants could then argue amongst themselves, but I could say: "how did I know that the cop-result was (Not) Mafia or Cult if I am not a cop?".

I agree that this is a problem in a Methodical game, which is why I took a number of steps to discourage/reduce the effectiveness of claims, including:
  • Safeclaims for the Scum.
  • Most of the Cops were in fact useless.
  • Lots of hints about a possible Cult.
  • Giving the impression that there was a non-Methodical killer
  • Posting the Townie Role PM (as I always do).
Nevertheless, the claims did help the Town at the end. Whether it would have been even easier for the Town if I hadn't done the above, who knows...

There is quite an element of luck in this game, but I'm not sure that's such a bad thing -- everyone knows what they are getting themselves into, and it adds some interest. Methodical Mafia 2 will be even more interesting...
