Unbalanced Mafia

A somewhat-bastard game brought to you by mastin2 creating her own personal playground

.

RULES

:

Flavor's flavor. Nothing more.
Standard site rules are in place; you should REALLY know these by now.
Deadlines:
Days are two weeks (or until lynch); nights are two days (except weekend-nights which're three). Failure to get majority is a no-lynch; failure to submit an action is a no-action. (I do accept them in advance and in QTs.)
Voting
must be bolded or in vote tags to be counted. If I recognize who it's for, it counts.
I'll send out
Prods
after three days, but will poke players on request before then. They must post within two days and cannot let themselves receive three prods, or they'll be replaced.
Have fun, but
don't be a jerkass
. (Really, in THIS game, you need to have the mindset of this being a casual game for fun, to be taken lightly.) Seriously, I'll force-replace you if you prove toxic to the game's atmosphere.

Player vote history now distinguishes between Vote tags (==) and bold-votes (--); an extra dash was added for visibility; Unvotes will add an additional > to help emphasize the shift.

Damn straight. Took me basically two hours to do three VCs. Daystart VCs take more time to make than late-day VCs, I had to actually create the new format and get used to it which took a lotta typing, and the format's new to me meaning my speed will increase with practice, but it's still a ton of work.

Fun mafiascum trivia fact: back in the day, some moderators actually PREFERRED having votecounts (consistently) in the middle of the page. Though I forget the exact reasoning behind this decision, I believe it was similar to the justification for top-of-the-page: something reasonably easy to refer to location-wise on a page. (Clearly, I am a traditionalist and this middle-of-page was intentional. Clearly.)

By the way, for my new VCs, there are a couple of other changes I considered, but ultimately decided I wouldn't put in unless asked by a player to do so. These being,
-On the "changes" section, linking to the post the player changes their vote. (I leaned against it for redundancy and confusion.)
-On the voting chronology section, every time a player shifts their vote, noting who they're shifting off of. (Rather than just noting it for explicit unvotes, as it is currently.)

If you have thoughts on it, let me know.

Plurality lynching on MS.net just means that there's not a no-lynch if there's no majority at deadline, and that someone gets lynched no matter what. The exact rules of how differ. Off-site, a fairly common way is to roll the die and whoever loses the roll gets the rope. MS.net

has a very hard aversion to randomness, though, so other methods are preferred. The "lynch everyone at that number" is nearly unheard of, though not impossible I suppose, yet most common is methods of tiebreaking. The person who last held the highest number of votes and/or the person who has held that number of votes the longest are both fairly common tiebreakers.

...But as you can tell, that itself can be a bit of a headache. Honestly, one of the reasons a no-lynch is a common deadline method is because it's simpler to understand and enforce.

I'll say that the basic idea behind the setup right here and now was a game that would be hilariously townsided if the town didn't act as most towns would, but would be hilariously scumsided if the town DID act as most towns would.

What do I mean?
-Bulbazak didn't claim miller. So there was no Miller vs. 1x miller drama.
-shos vs. mollie never happened because shos got nightkilled N1.
-EddieFenix DID take the bait on Voidedmafia, but not on Mathdino OR ProHawk.

In short? The roles that were clearly contradicting one another (by design)...had minimal friction and were working together instead, thus hilariously townsided. With a different playerlist, and the scum having the roles they do, I think you can tell just how badly the town could have been massacred.
-DGB being the only VT after massclaim would be suspect if all scum claimed PRs. If all scum claimed VTs, perhaps moreso if the scum died or perhaps offering the scum cover.
-The doctors could have easily gotten lynched, as could have guille. (Heck, thanks to RB-beats-JK, he almost did.)
-The investigatives could have been paranoid of each other. Yes, they would ultimately get town results...assuming the scum didn't mess with their results, which the lawyer could for all but the gunsmith (who, for the purposes of this game, was ultimately just a stronger cop) and the persistent cop (who I was expecting to only get an average of two results, since the game lasting long enough for three would mean the doctors and JK woulda been quite busy stopping scum kills). And given the paranoid nature of the game, the only truly-clear cop was the most unique.

...Which makes particular sense when you consider that the game was flavored to be "kinda vaguely like a Normal, except throwing balance out the window", thus, I had meant for the unusual roles to be suspected. (This, by the way, is why the VT PM was on the first page: like I said, the aesthetic I was aiming for was a vaguely-Normal-looking game, which only on inspection was obviously-not.) It's also the cause of a great mistake I made in the game:

Not giving scum fakeclaims.
Given that I had meant for this to essentially BE the above, of similar-to-a-Normal, in which scum don't get fakeclaims (though they may receive a safeclaim such as "Mafia Sane Cop"

), I didn't hand them out any for this game. Since they'd be paraphrasing for their claims anyway, I figured it'd be no problem, and while I never got to fully make it laid out, my general modding policy is that if scum ask about the way a role they want to claim works, I'll give them how that role works off of the wording they have given me.

Given that all three scum fakeclaimed in a convoluted manner, this was clearly a mistake on my end, and for that, I do apologize to the scum.

I have the setup more or less finalized and most of the finer points figured out, but I want to make sure I actually have a good crowd who'd be willing to

It'd be the same but not the same at all, in that it'd still be classified as a bastard, it'd still be meant to be played casually and not seriously, and would still be meant for the fun of it. With what I have planned, I think it'll be even more entertaining than this game was, so long as you go in with the mindset that the game's explicitly not going to be balanced.

The amount of craziness in a large (even a normal one) is high. Make it a theme, twice as much. Make it THIS kind of theme, and I can't survive without one.

It'd probably be mid-January, maybe early-February, when it would begin the official process. First half of January would be spent tweaking the details and getting it prepared and whatnot. (Including asking zoraster if it's okay to even run the game, since "joke-games", which I loosely categorize this as and which the sequel would also be, are something that I'm not sure are instantly-allowed.)

Shame that I didn't get to do N3 flavor. I totally woulda delayed the daystart if I had known that I wouldn't get the chance to write anything but a final lynch scene.

Also, I want to ask you as players: I'm seeing pretty good feedback for the game, which is a good sign, but there's something I want to know. I know that, for ME, sitting in the mod's chair, this game was so much of a blast to have been a part of that I'd definitely call it a Game of the Year contender, but I'm biased as the creator of the game and having sit from a point of omnipotence. So was it just good-good, or was it amazingly-awesome-good? (GOTY contender.)

It was more or less what I was anticipating of a typical town: duplicate roles creating seeming contradictions and lopsidedness in the setup, so surely there MUST be a liar in them. (To be honest, it was actually a bit of a surprise that two scum claimed investigative PRs. I was expecting them, seeing multiple investigative PRs, to realize that the town was meant to distrust them.)

Do you need any help for tweaking? I mean, I'm not an excellent balancer (or un-balancer, as the case may be), but still.

A second pair of eyes, though, would be helpful to make sure the sequel game runs smoothly--this game had a few hiccups and the extra pair of eyes will help me get better prepared for the chaos and anarchy.

Also, I don't think it's really GotY. And to be quite honest, if it weren't for Mollie and ProHawk taking snipes at each other for pretty much all of D3 and bits of D2, I would nom it for Most Enjoyable or something.

The two awards (GotY and Most Enjoyable) are one and the same now if memory serves, thus why I asked.

In all of 2014, it's certainly the game I've had the most fun being involved in, butyeah, it was mainly on the enjoyment side rather than any other particular aspect.
